GRIFFIN MOSS – A lonely, depressed postcard artist living in London.
SABINE STROHEM – An optimistic artist living in the South Pacific; she can see images that Griffin is painting on the other side of the world. (But is she just a figment of the artist’s imagination?)
VICTOR FROLATTI – A mysterious figure who attempts prevent Griffin and Sabine from coming together.
Summary
Griffin Moss’s quiet life as a postcard artist in London is disrupted when he receives a cryptic postcard from Sabine Strohem, a woman he has never met, but who claims she can telepathically see his art as he is in the process of creating it. Overcoming Griffin’s initial doubts as to Sabine’s truthfulness (or even her existence), the two begin to correspond regularly.
The two gradually come to believe that they are soulmates. However, when Sabine insists on coming to meet him in person, Griffin panics and leaves London before she arrives. Griffin ends up traveling around the world while Sabine claims to take up residence at his home in the city, and all the while the two continue to correspond. Eventually Griffin attempts to travel to the mysterious, uncharted South Pacific islands where Sabine claims to have grown up, but he does not reach them and, after nearly drowning, decides to return to London where he intends to meet Sabine in person. But the mystery deepens when he arrives back at his home, as he finds no sign that she was ever there.
Sabine claims that there must be some mystical barrier between them, and she begins looking for ways to break through it. Griffin once again ponders whether Sabine is merely a figment of his imagination, but gradually becomes convinced that she is real and that they can be together if only they find a way to bridge their worlds. In the meantime, a mysterious figure, Victor Frolatti, begins to stalk Sabine, claiming to understand the nature of their predicament, but warning of dire consequences if the Griffin and Sabine should come together. The lovers devise a plan that they believe will allow them to be together, but pursuing their plan requires them to elude Frolatti and to overcome unforeseen challenges. Will Griffin and Sabine ever find a way to be together?
